FUNDAMENTAL GENERAL SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINES

The Department of Fundamental General Scientific Disciplines is the fundamental compartmentalized element of the medical faculty of Kharkiv International Medical University.

The primary motive of the department is to offer basic training for future doctors on the platform of the general biomedical disciplines, integration of student’s basic and unique capabilities in reference with global benchmark of medical education, as well as improvement of professional responsibility and research-based clinical thinking of medical professionals via the execution of educational and methodological, research, organizational and educational work.

The department has a well-reputed research and teaching staff. As of now, it has 18 lecturers who are Doctors of Medical Sciences with PHDs in medicine.

The teaching staff of the department is a team of specialists with a high level of theoretical and practical training in various fields of biomedical sciences.

The department is proud of the scientific achievements of its teachers, who are the authors of many monographs, textbooks, workbooks, atlas of histology, patents, articles indexed in international scientific databases Scopus and Web of Science.

The professors of the department offering lectures are consistently working to upgrade their professional expertise, have internships opportunities at reputed Ukrainian universities (Kharkiv National Medical University, V. Karazin Kharkiv National University, National Academy of Pharmacy of Ukraine, Kharkiv National University of Pharmacy,) and all over the world (USA, Poland, France, Bulgaria, Denmark, Nigeria and others).

The faculty members of the department are working on the progress of the scientific subjects “innovations in biomedical sciences and ways of improving future doctors’ fundamental training”.

The curriculum of biomedical disciplines is updated regularly taking into consideration the recent scientific advancements in medical domain, innovative researches and methodologies, new findings in medicines in the cognition of the mechanisms and concepts of pathogenesis of diseases analysed in clinical disciplines.

Following issues exist in the program of the discipline "Histology, Cytology and Embryology" with the latest addition of the latest developments in the science:

  • Hormones of hunger and obesity.
  • Development and prevention of insulin resistance of type 2 diabetes.
  • Treatment of obesity (topic “Endocrine system”) Stem cells and their use in medicine.
  • Treatment of Parkinson’s disease with stem cells (topic “Connective tissue”).
  • Bionic eye with high resolution (theme “Sensory system”).
  • Implants and prostheses that mimic biological functions (topic “Nervous system”)

Attributes of teaching standards of the department:

  • Active implementation of problem-based learning approaches throughout all the academic disciplines.
  • Case study - Creating a diagnosis by developing a comprehensive algorithm to study functional and morphological disorders while working with a specific clinical case or with the demonstration on experimentals, virtual or dummy models.
  • Practical Methods - Practice in anatomical museum work with plastinated cadaver simulators, an interactive 3D anatomical training complex "Pirogov" to learn the systems and organs of the human body from all angles – both healthy and affected by various pathologies.
  • Building a full cycle of training – from visual acquaintance with anatomical material by layers and systems, illustrations of rare anatomical cases, receiving textual information – till checking the quality of students’ knowledge and automatic checking the results).
  • Preparing by students for presentations of educational material on the topics of classes; organization of competitions, thematic Olympiads, scientific and cognitive conferences on the discipline.

The latest achievements of biomedical sciences and scientific research of teachers are the basis for scientific research of students. Students participate in research through the activities of the student scientific society. Under the guidance of teachers, students take an active part in regional, national and international scientific conferences and workshops, competitions, round tables on topical issues of biomedical sciences.

Educational work with students is carried out through curatorial hours, participation of teachers of the department in the organization of university events, thematic holidays, competitions, festivals, open days at the university and more.

The teaching staff of the department makes every effort to ensure that students are interested in studying, have a high quality of knowledge, research-oriented clinical thinking, aware of the professional responsibility of the doctor and become true professionals in the field of medicine in the future.
